Why State Senate?

I am running for the State Senate because I have the heart and the courage to stand up for the values, needs and constitutional rights of my American community. I have the advanced education, passion, and experience required to take up the urgent work facing us now.

Fighting for what must be done would be impossible in my native country. As a new U.S. citizen, I deeply feel the responsibility to take up our common struggles and participate in our democracy. I grew up in a Communist country and learned that we must not take for granted the rights and responsibilities so many Americans enjoy: Freedom of speech, mobility, religious expression, the pursuit of happiness and respect for individual sovereignty. We have the right to be safe in our homes and our bodies, and we have the responsibility to vote, take active roles in serving our nation, and be responsible stewards of our public lands. I read the Constitution and carry it with me always as a reminder of the grand vision of America’s founding fathers. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.” My hope is to become that acorn, one capable of sprouting and bringing forth the changes my new nation needs.

I also am running for office because I have seen what happens when catastrophe strikes. I lived through Chernobyl and its aftermath. I know first-hand what it feels like for talented and able people like my parents to feel utterly helpless and fooled by their own government in the face of a deadly disaster. For us and our children’s sake, I believe we must take immediate and decisive action to protect our health and environment. As a mother of an American child and wife of a two-tour, honorably discharged combat veteran, I yearn for clear skies, clean rivers and oceans that will be here for future generations.

We must not fail to meet the imminent challenges we are facing. We must protect our environment and our health by reining corporate polluters, work to revive public education, humanize our immigration system and upgrade our neglected infrastructure.

Democracy requires that we show up, stand up, and collectively create a better future. We must be the change we want to see and embody passion for our planet, our country and community. I sincerely hope to earn the privilege of being that change and your voice in our government.
